What causes strabismus?

For proper vision and alignment, each eye’s six external muscles (responsible for controlling eye position and movement) must be coordinated in terms of position, function, and neurological control. If the muscles themselves, or the vision center in the brain that controls them, are not working properly, strabismus occurs.

It is also possible for a child with farsightedness to develop a type of strabismus called accommodative esotropia, which is due to trying to focus excessively.

Genetics are also a factor when it comes to strabismus. If one parent has it, the child has a greater risk of developing it.
