What is strabismus?
Put simply, strabismus is a misalignment of the eyes. Approximately four percent of individuals in the United States have strabismus. This condition can result in a lazy eye. Although anyone can develop strabismus, disorders that affect the brain (like a brain tumor, Down syndrome, or cerebral palsy) can increase the likelihood of developing it.
There is more than one type of strabismus, because the affected eye can turn inward, outward, upward, or downward. The different types include:
- Extropia
- Esotropia
- Hypotropia
- Hypertropia
Strabismus usually affects the same eye, but the eyes can take turns being misaligned.
